ℌEXOℜℭℑSMOS is a musician working in the fields of computer sound, AI and Machine Learning for music, sonic immersion and interaction. With the use of prehispanic sound artifacts from ancient México, contemporary brain-computer interface technology and hand crafted electronic instruments, ℌEXOℜℭℑSMOS situates the listener in a ritualistic and rhythmical noise soundscape that questions the politics of colonization and occupation – whether it be on the contemporary dance floor or through interactive sound installations.

For this year’s edition of A.MAZE, ℌEXOℜℭℑSMOS will team up with Decochon Studio, creators of MuX: a music making, virtual reality environment that through creative reimagining of how music is designed allows for the development of shareable and marketable, interactive musical experiences in virtual reality for engagement in the physical and digital worlds.

ℌEXOℜℭℑSMOS will present a set specially crafted live-set in MuX that augments electronic musical performance into the VR realm.

Devolution of Kingdom – Exhibition Tour with Thomas van den Berg
For the ultimate insight into the development of Kingdom and its design decisions. Guided tour through the exhibition by the developer Thomas van den Berg, supported by the curator of the exhibition Csongor Baranyai. Complementing the exhibited versions by background information, secrets and anecdotes.

Kingdom is a 2D sidescrolling strategy/ resource management hybrid with a minimalist feel wrapped in a modern pixel art aesthetic. Play the role of a king or queen atop their horse and enter a procedurally generated realm primed to sustain a kingdom, then toss gold to peasants and turn them into your loyal subjects in order to make your kingdom flourish. Protect your domain at night from the greedy creatures looking to steal your coins and crown, and explore the nearby, mysterious forests to discover curious and cryptic artifacts to aid your kingdom.

Kingdom was developed by the two-man team of Thomas van den Berg and Marco Bancale (noio and Licorice). Kingdom is an expanded, standalone version of a Flash game by noio. The game was renamed Kingdom: Classic after the announcement of Kingdom: New Lands. The expansion released August 2016 and addressed some of the repetitive aspects critics found on the game's original release and added new lands to explore. Kingdom Two Crowns evolves the micro strategy game with a new cooperative play experience and a campaign mode.

The tours are a part of Devolution #5, a cooperation between Noio, Devolution, A MAZE. / Berlin 2019, Game Design // UE and Clash of Realities.

Devolution of Ape Out – Exhibition Tour with Gabe Cuzzillo
For the ultimate insight into the development of Ape Out and its design decisions. Guided tour through the exhibition by the developer Gabe Cuzzillo, supported by the co-curator of Devolution Mascha Camino. Complementing the exhibited versions by background information, secrets and anecdotes.

Ape Out is an intense and colorfully stylized smash ‘em up about primal escape, rhythmic violence, and frenetic jazz. Build up nearly unstoppable momentum and use your captors as both weapons and shields to crush everyone on your procedurally generated path to freedom. Find your rhythm in the chaos as a dynamic soundtrack of drums, cymbals, and decapitations drive the action to the edge of mayhem.

Development on Ape Out begann when Cuzzillo entered into game development courses at New York University (NYU), where he also worked on an independent study with Bennett Foddy. Foddy contributed to Ape Out's art, while Matt Boch, an associate professor for NYU's Game Center, worked on the game's music system and sound design. Ape Out was part of the NYU Game Center Incubator and partially financed by Indie Fund. Publisher Devolver Digital announced their involvement in Ape Out in March 2017, when they released a playable trailer.

The tours are a part of Devolution #5, a cooperation between Gabe Cuzzillo, Devolution, A MAZE. / Berlin 2019, Game Design // UE and Clash of Realities.

Working Group: representation and game mechanics
Registration is closed. We will reach out to you before Friday to confirm your attendance.
The discussion might be recorded, but no filming or photographs will be released, nor will any participant be identified unless they agree to it.

Come to this Working Group to discuss issues of representations, story, narrative, and its relationship with game mechanics; reflect on the past, present and what you see for the future; facilitated by award-winning media critic Anita Sarkeesian.

Some sample topics to be discussed:
- How, if at all, has representation in gaming changed in the last 10 years?
- What do you see as the next major hurdle for games to overcome in the next 10 years?
- What obstacles might get in the way of that?
- What do you envision for the future of games?
- What impact will new platforms (Stadia, Apple Arcade), or new technologies (hardware, consoles, Mixed Reality) have on the future of games?

Devolution of Hidden Folks – Exhibition Tour with Adriaan de Jongh
For the ultimate insight into the development of Hidden Folks and its design decisions. Guided tour through the exhibition by the developer Adriaan de Jongh, supported by the co-curator of Devolution Mascha Camino. Complementing the exhibited versions by background information, secrets and anecdotes.

Hidden Folks is an interactive wimmelbilderbuch video game in which players are tasked with locating hidden characters, objects, and animals in a series of environments. Everything in Hidden Folks is draw by hand, scanned in, placed, layered manually, animated, and scripted. All sounds in the game are mouth-made sounds, made (or rather 'yelled out') by the developers. There are no time limits, no points, just miniature areas with a bunch of folks and objects to be found.

A prototype of the game was created by Adriaan de Jongh after he saw detailed illustrations at Sylvain Tegroeg's graduate art show, and the two began collaborating in 2014 after Adriaan showed Sylvain the prototype using the illustrations from Sylvain’s website. The idea of creating a hidden object game came naturally from Sylvain's detailed art. The game was built using the Unity game engine, but Adriaan also built custom tools to specifically handle the process of digitising the hand-drawn art and the amount of illustrations and objects in the game.
After completely new versions of the game for GDC, PAX East, and Gamescom in 2016, they went into full production to make Hidden Folks v1.0, which was released in February 2017. The game initially featured around 15 areas, Adriaan and Sylvain added new themed areas to the game in 2017 and 2018.

The tours are a part of Devolution #5, a cooperation between Adriaan de Jongh, Devolution, A MAZE. / Berlin 2019, Game Design // UE and Clash of Realities.
